GREGG ELLIS:’Guy that writes for Journal’ moves on
I remember the call as if it were yesterday. It came in January 1999 as I was sitting at my desk at the Indianapolis Star. On the other end was a familiar voice. Gene Phelps.
He asked if I was interested in moving back to Mississippi for a job at the Daily Journal. As I looked outside my window to see how many more inches of snow had fallen and dreading the evening chore of shoveling my driveway, I was quick to say, absolutely.
It was a no-brainer, really.
I wanted to be back closer to family, but I wanted to remain in the newspaper business. So when an offer was fashioned, I grabbed it and never looked back.
My, how time flies.
As I reflect back on this wonderful 10-year journey for my family and me in Tupelo and here at the Daily Journal, it is one filled with lasting memories and countless new friendships.
Needless to say, I have been overwhelmingly blessed.
