LSU football coach Les Miles remained coy on the Tigers quarterback position Wednesday, saying neither Andrew Hatch nor Jarrett Lee knows who the starter will be against Appalachian State.
Those two and freshman Jordan Jefferson took turns in passing drills during the three brief periods open to the media during Wednesday’s practice.
“Nah, neither one of ’em knows,” Miles said. “Both of them split reps with the ones (Wednesday) and practiced pretty well.”
Role playing
Emulating Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards’ dangerous dual-threat ability didn’t figure to be an easy task this week, but Miles said a relatively unknown Tiger filled the bill well.
Redshirt freshman cornerback John Williams, considered one of the team’s best all-around athletes, got the job as scout team QB.
Perhaps best known as a first cousin to former LSU standout Domanick Davis, Williams played receiver, quarterback and cornerback at Breaux Bridge.
“John Williams is tremendous athletic receiver and an ex-quarterback, so we made him the quarterback for Appalachian State,” Miles said. “He did a great job all week. In several periods we went together we put Jefferson in and he gave them a simulation of that style.”
Alexander unlikely to start
After missing most of preseason practice, LSU defensive tackle Charles Alexander was on the field for the third consecutive day Wednesday.
The senior wore a sleeve-type soft brace wrapped around his left thigh, protecting the hamstring he injured in the first week of preseason camp. Alexander missed the final 11 games of last season with an ACL injury to his right knee, which he said is fine earlier this week.
Asked if Alexander had shown enough in three practices this week to warrant a starting spot, Miles said “I don’t think so. I think he’ll play if his health continues.”
