Former JPS superintendent gets $18,181/month from settlement/consulting contract

By: Magnolia Tribune - August 18, 2008

16 WAPT has obtained the contract for Dr. Earl Watkins. It is the one that will pay the now former Jackson Public Schools superintendent more than $200,000 over the next 11 months to serve as a consultant.

16 WAPT obtained a copy of what is called a “settlement agreement and contract for consulting services” with Dr. Earl Watkins. It was secured right after the School Board selected Dr. Lonnie Edwards to be his replacement.

The contract is for 11 months, ending June 30, 2009. Watkins will get paid $18,181 a month. Over an 11 month period, it adds up to be $199,992.

Besides consulting with the school board, Watkins is charged with publishing a comprehensive analysis of what the school system needs to do to improve. In that contract, it states if Watkins accepts another “full time” job, and he has more than two months left on the contract, he will get a one time check of $36,364.
