Whatever caused LSU sophomore quarterback Andrew Hatch to leave the football field before he was scheduled to Saturday, coach Les Miles wasn’t calling it an injury.
“Hatch probably got a little stiffness in his back,” Miles said after a 140-play scrimmage in Tiger Stadium, “and we pulled him prematurely, so there was an imbalance in terms of snaps with the quarterbacks.
“I think both quarterbacks played well, and I think both quarterbacks ran the team well.”
Redshirt freshman Jarrett Lee is the other player in that picture. Miles said true freshman Jordan Jefferson played a limited role, elevated slightly by Hatch’s early exit.
Jefferson “got a couple of snaps and rushed for 25 yards and had a couple of completions,” said Miles, who complimented him on his performance.
The scrimmage was closed except for members of the Gridiron Club and high school coaches, LSU officials said. Reporters were not allowed to watch.
Miles restricted LSU sports information to releasing rushing and passing statistics as a collective rather than breaking down the stats individually.
In a news release, the sports information office credited the Tigers with 150 rushing yards and listed the three quarterbacks as a combined 26-for-50 for 255 yards and two touchdowns.
The No. 1 offense competed against the No. 2 defense, the No. 2 offense competed against the No. 1 defense and, for two eight-play segments, the No. 1 offense went against the No. 1 defense, Miles said.
He called the scrimmage a “pretty good go” but said there were a few too many miscues.
“I didn’t think we were as sharp as we’d like,” Miles said, lamenting what he described as too many penalties.
“Stuff we can get fixed,” he said.
The plan is to iron them out Tuesday at the next tackling scrimmage.
