LSU opens the season ranked No. 6 in the USA Today coaches’ poll.
The Tigers received three first-place votes.
LSU is ranked behind two of its SEC foes – No. 1 Georgia and No. 5 Florida. The Bulldogs received 22 of 61 first-place votes. The Gators received five No. 1 tallies.
Southern California (14 first-place votes) is ranked second in the poll, followed by Ohio State (14), which lost to LSU, 38-24, in the BCS Championship Game in January.
Oklahoma is ranked fourth, garnering the remaining three first-place votes.
Auburn (No. 11) and Tennessee (No. 18) are the other two SEC teams in the top 25. In all, the SEC has five team ranked.
LSU coach Les Miles is one of the poll voters again this season, sports information director Michael Bonnette said. Miles was a voter last season.
The Tigers have earned top-10 rankings in many preseason magazines.
“While still among the elite teams,” USA Today writes, “it has been a rough offseason for the Tigers. All-America defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, quarterback Matt Flynn and leading rusher Jacob Hester are among the players now in NFL training camps.
Ryan Perrilloux, who was to replace Flynn, was kicked off the team, leaving unproven backups Jarrett Lee and Andrew Hatch.
