Musgrove, Wicker trade criticisms at Neshoba Fair

By: Magnolia Tribune - July 31, 2008

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, 7/31/8

Republican U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker of Tupelo hit hard Wednesday against Democratic challenger Ronnie Musgrove at the Neshoba County Fair.

Wicker, speaking to a largely friendly crowd under the tin-roofed pavilion, criticized Musgrove’s record as governor and said he did not need to carry that record to the United States Senate.

With Musgrove sitting on the front row after delivering his speech, Wicker said facetiously, “Now I fully understand why he beat Haley Barbour.”

It was, of course, the Republican Barbour who denied Musgrove a second term as governor in 2003, defeating him in the November general election. And then Barbour appointed Wicker at the end of 2007 to the Senate after incumbent Trent Lott unexpectedly stepped down.
