Neshoba fair: Annual ‘houseparty’ begins

The 119th edition of “Mississippi’s Giant Houseparty” will feature two days of political speaking – including U.S. Senate and U.S. House candidates along with statewide and legislative officials and judicial candidates.

The fair’s usual program of harness and horse racing will begin Sunday and continue through Friday and the arts and crafts event will be held today.

The fair remains the state’s premier political venue, where politicians offer “stump” speeches rather than slick televised commercial ads. It’s a chance for voters to meet and greet candidates and see them in a competitive environment.

Speeches by U.S. Senate candidates Roger Wicker and Ronnie Musgrove will headline the speaking program on Wednesday while Gov. Haley Barbour’s annual speech will lead the speaking program on Thursday.
