Funding needed for program to build, retrofit homes

State funding is needed to start a program expected to result in stronger homes and insurance discounts for property owners who meet the building standards.

The state Legislature approved the program in 2007, but has not provided funding. Mississippi Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney says the department needs $400,000 from the state in order to keep $1.2 million in federal funds.

“I’ve asked for it and they’ve turned me down so far,” said Chaney, who helped secure stronger building standards while serving as a state senator. This is Chaney’s first year as insurance commissioner.
