Can developments stem outflow?

New census figures place Jackson fourth in the nation in population loss among large cities, but some in the city think a turnaround may be in sight.

Mississippi’s capital lost nearly 2,472 people in 2007, or 1.4 percent of its total population, according to the recently released U.S. Census Bureau figures. But three other cities – Columbus, Ga., Baton Rouge and Hollywood, Fla. – lost greater percentages of their population over the same period.

Jackson’s population now stands at 175,710 – a 4.6 percent decline from the 2000 census.
