Miss. GOP benefits from Bush fundraiser

By: Magnolia Tribune - July 16, 2008

Thanks in part to a fundraiser hosted by President Bush, Sen. Roger Wicker raised more than $1 million in campaign cash in the three-month period that ended June 30.

But the Mississippi Republican Party will keep most of the money from the $1,000-a-plate event held in Jackson on July 1.

Wicker, a Republican appointed to fill retired Sen. Trent Lott’s seat, faces former Gov. Ronnie Musgrove in November. According to his campaign, Wicker raised about $840,000 from individuals and political action committees in the last quarter.

Musgrove has lagged in fundraising, in part because Wicker was able to take money from a campaign fund he maintained as a House candidate. The Musgrove campaign’s totals show the Democrat has increased his fundraising strength, raising about $814,000 during the three-month period.
