Nuclear waste to be moved through Miss.

By: Magnolia Tribune - July 16, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger, 7/16/8

Mississippi motorists could soon be sharing the road with radioactive waste generated decades ago in developing the first atomic bomb.

Tons of waste from the famed Manhattan Project will be transported in specialty rigs across Mississippi and through Jackson on I-20 during the next three years.

The waste – mostly contaminated clothes, lab equipment, tools and scrap – will be taken to New Mexico, where the government has built a vault in salt beds nearly a half-mile deep. All of the material has been contaminated by man-made isotopes such as plutonium, but officials say motorists should not be worried.
