Special session: Agency a pawn in ad dispute

By: Magnolia Tribune - May 17, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 5/16/8

The House Ways and Means Committee is within its rights to consider how much the state spends each year on advertising, and lawmakers are within their rights to scrutinize the state’s employment agency.

But combining both is counterproductive.

The committee met Wednesday to discuss the state Department of Employment Security, and look at advertising. It’s believed Gov. Haley Barbour will call a special session May 21 for lawmakers to reauthorize the Department of Employment Security; otherwise it will cease to exist at the start of the new fiscal year July 1. If it’s not reauthorized, Barbour says, employers will pay more unemployment insurance taxes – from 0.8 percent of payroll to 6.2 percent – because a federal tax credit will disappear.
