1st District: Miss. going over to the ‘D’ column?

By: Magnolia Tribune - May 16, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 5/15/8

Mississippians take pride in electing “the individual, not the party,” but it’s inescapable that some would see Tuesday’s election of a Democrat to the 1st Congressional District as a political sea change.

Democratic Prentiss County Chancery Clerk Travis Childers defeated Republican Southaven Mayor Greg Davis in the runoff, despite heavy national Republican Party involvement, including an election eve visit by Vice President Dick Cheney. Gov. Haley Barbour and Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant, both Republicans, also stumped for Davis.

Childers will serve the final months of the term of Roger Wicker, a Republican appointed to replace Republican Trent Lott, who retired from the U.S. Senate in December.
