Senator: Special session may be needed

House Bill 872 would have kept the Mississippi Department of Employment Security in operation after July 1, the date fiscal 2009 begins. But it died in conference on Monday, according to the Legislature’s Web site.

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Dean Kirby, R-Pearl, said lawmakers could not agree on language in the bill.

Killing the legislation also will affect some other state programs, such as the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Diversion Program, Kirby said. The program provides financial assistance for some low-income families.

Already some are speculating a special session will have to be called to deal with a funding crisis the Medicaid program is facing.

“Unless we agree upon a bill and we’re called in to special session” the department will be shut down, Kirby said.
