Logan Williams had no idea how much his world was going to change when he woke up Wednesday morning.
The true freshman from Demascus, Ark., looked to be destined for a redshirt after having not seen any playing time at third base in the first 32 games of the season.
However, injuries to a pair of key Ole Miss infielders in recent weeks forced Williams and the coaching staff to make a tough decision prior to the second game against South Alabama.
“As of (Wednesday) morning, I still thought I was redshirting,” Williams said. “Coach Bianco called me into his office to talk about what was going on. We’ve had lots of bad luck losing two of our best infielders in (Evan) Button and (Cody) Overbeck, and he just asked if I could come in and fill a role.”
Overbeck missed his second straight game because of a bad bout with shin splints and was in a walking boot following Wednesday’s game.
Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said Overbeck would play this weekend, but the situation with Button is not as promising.
Button, the starting shortstop for much of the early portion of the season, was recently diagnosed with a stress fracture in his back.
