A bill that would allow hunting deer over bait is headed to the desk of Gov. Haley Barbour.
The Mississippi House on Monday voted 68-51 to concur with Senate amendments to H.B. 1089. Under the Senate version, baiting is allowed subject to regulation by the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.
Just last spring, Barbour praised the 2007 Legislature for giving all baiting authority to state wildlife officials, saying it was a biological issue and not a political issue. He also said he had ethical problems with taking deer over bait.
