The names of almost 11,000 in Madison County removed from voting rolls have been restored, but the controversy over the purge has prompted a call for a federal investigation and the resignation of a county election commissioner.
District 1 County Election Commissioner Sue Sautemeister had removed 10,942 names from the active voter registration rolls to the inactive list since January, meaning those names wouldn’t show up on rolls at election time.
Federal election laws prevent removing names within 90 days of a federal election.
Republican and Democratic primary elections are Tuesday for president and Congress.
“All of them were restored (Thursday) morning,” Madison County Circuit Clerk Lee Westbrook said. “They should have never been taken off.”
