State Rep. Steve Holland says he wants to be a voice for the middle class if he’s elected in north Mississippi’s 1st Congressional District.
Prentiss County Chancery Clerk Travis Childers promises to focus on job creation and economic development. So does businessman and Calhoun City Alderman Marshall Coleman. All three are Democratic candidates for the seat left vacant by Republican Roger Wicker, who was appointed to the U.S. Senate seat long held by Trent Lott.
The Republicans in the congressional race are Glenn McCullough, Tupelo’s former mayor and the former chairman of the Tennessee Valley Authority; Southaven Mayor and former state Rep. Greg Davis; and Dr. Randy Russell, an Oxford ophthalmologist. They all say controlling illegal immigration is a top concern.
The other candidates are Democrat Brian Neely of Tupelo, independent Wally Pang of Batesville and Green Party candidate John Wages Jr. of Tupelo.
The candidates are preparing for Tuesday’s party primaries. A runoff, if needed, will be April 1. The general election is Nov. 4.
