Bill would cut some jail terms

Bills that could allow nonviolent offenders to serve less time in prison, permit sheriffs to use radar to catch speeders and give the public greater access to crime reports are on the calendar for Mississippi lawmakers to consider this week.

In the House, legislators also will hear testimony about campaign finance reform measures that would prohibit them from using campaign money for personal use.

House Bill 729 would provide an opportunity for early parole for offenders whose crimes did not include an attempt to cause bodily harm. They would have to serve 25 percent of their sentences before the state Parole Board could consider their requests. Currently, they must serve 85 percent.
