The Lawman and The Confidential Informant
Over in Alabama today, Dickie Scruggs’ lawyers are trying to get federal contempt charges against him dismissed. Those charges stem from U.S. District Judge William Acker’s contention that Scruggs violated his court’s order to surrender some stolen documents that Scruggs got from two whistleblower sisters working for a company under contract to State Farm.
Instead, Scruggs gave the documents to Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood. Scruggs’ mouthpiece now says that was okay since Hood is a “law enforcement officer.” Hood even made Scruggs “a confidential informant.”
Scruggs hoped to use the documents to force State Farm to settle Katrina claims. But since Scruggs was a campaign contributor to Hood and a major one at that, the judge didn’t buy it. And why should he?
