Senate candidates focused on November

The candidates to replace Trent Lott in the United States Senate are moving forward after Wednesday’s court decision setting the election for Nov. 4.

The state Supreme Court, by a 7-2 vote, upheld Gov. Haley Barbour’s decision to hold the special election on Nov. 4, which is the date of the regularly scheduled general election.

Attorney General Jim Hood took Barbour to court over the date, saying the “career attorneys” in his office interpreted the law to mean that Barbour must call the special election within 100 days. The Hinds County Circuit Court agreed with Hood, but the Supreme Court ruled in Barbour’s favor.
