Hood should welcome change in law

The state Senate on Friday passed a bill that would require the attorney general to go through a public review process before hiring private attorneys.

The measure still faces scrutiny in the House, which has defeated similar bills in the past.

The private attorney issue surfaced when Hood hired attorney Joey Langston of Booneville to sue telecommunications giant MCI. The lawsuit resulted in Mississippi getting $118 million. Langston was awarded $14 million in legal fees.

Langston was among Hood’s largest campaign contributors in the 2007 election.

He also pleaded guilty earlier this month to conspiring with attorney Dickie Scruggs and others in the Scruggs law firm in an influence peddling case.
