Educators React To Governor Barbour’s Education Promises

By: Magnolia Tribune - January 23, 2008

WLOX, 1/22/8

Under Governor Haley Barbour’s proposal, teachers who mentor would get a $1,000 bonus.

The governor also promised 100-percent funding for school districts, and he announced a plan to keep veteran teachers in the classroom. He wants to raise the salaries of teachers who have more than 25 years experience. Educators say a boost in pay would boost morale.

“Education in Mississippi has always been put on the back burner,” said Dr. Mike Tatum, Gulfport School Assistant Superintendent. “But now, the governor’s putting it on the front burner, because he’s saying up front, this is going to be included in his budget.”

Harrison County School Superintendent Henry Arledge says the governor’s plans would help ease the teacher shortage that’s plaguing several districts.
