Gov. Haley Barbour said he will call a special election within 60 days to fill U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker’s vacated House seat in Mississippi’s 1st Congressional District.
The candidates will have another 60 days to campaign before the election.
The clock began ticking for Barbour on Monday when he appointed Wicker, R-Miss., to the Senate post held by Sen. Trent Lott, who retired last month. In accepting the appointment, Wicker gave up his House seat representing much of North Mississippi.
