Before last Tuesday, Republicans held five of the eight statewide offices. Since Tuesday, make the count seven of eight.
Not so in the Legislature.
In the state Senate, Republicans began the night with the slimmest of margins at 27-25, meaning a one seat swing would result in an evenly divided chamber. After the votes were counted, Democrats enjoyed a favorable net swing of three seats, resulting in a state Senate soon to be filled by 28 Democrats and 24 Republicans.
Democrats began election night with 75 seats in the House of Representatives to the Republicans’ 47. Subject to final certification of one extremely close race in Jackson County, the House will reflect exactly the same partisan split of 75 Democrats and 47 Republicans in the new Legislature.
