The race for House speaker between Billy McCoy and Jeff Smith is an underlying issue in the various legislative elections on Tuesday’s ballot. Who voters put into the 122 House seats will determine who’ll lead the legislative chamber for the next four years.
Smith, who’s represented his Lowndes County district since 1992, said he has enough support to unseat McCoy, who’s seeking his second term as speaker of the House.
“I have more than 62 signed pledge cards, so the numbers look good. However, still the November 6 races will be determinative,” Smith said.
Saying his opponent is miscounting the votes, McCoy expressed confidence he’ll have the 62-vote majority needed to be re-elected speaker.
“These are people who have looked me in the eye and said they’re going to vote for me for speaker,” McCoy said.
