Gov. shifts focus down stretch

“I would not think under normal circumstances a sitting Republican governor should have to” court black votes, said Joe Parker, a political science professor at the University of Southern Mississippi. “Maybe (Barbour’s) got it so sewn up in white votes, he’s looking for a landslide if he can peel off 5 percent of the black vote.”

Such a win would give a Barbour victory “more clout,” Parker said.

Said Barbour campaign spokesman Brian Perry: “Some Democrats think it is a waste of time for Republicans to campaign in predominantly black communities, but Gov. Barbour believes no voter is a waste of time. All Mississippians want better jobs, better schools, better health care and more opportunities. Gov. Barbour is running on his record in all communities across Mississippi.”
