After Hurricane Katrina, the immigrant population here helped brave storm-ravaged homes, working among the corpses of dogs, cats and humans and cleaning rotten food from refrigerators.
They rebuilt casinos, poured concrete, repaired roofs, installed wallboard and took on jobs when the battered Mississippi Gulf Coast had no solid work force of its own.
