NAACP: Micheal Vick and Leslie Southwick
Now comes the NAACP urging that animal rights groups and the media use restraint in not rushing to judgment on the NFL quarterback Michael Vick dogfighting case. Would that the NAACP use that same logic in their own opposition to the confirmation of Mississippi Judge Leslie Southwick’s nomination to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals!
R.L. White, president of the Atlanta chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said the Atlanta Falcons quarterback has been vilified by animal rights groups, talk radio and the news media and prematurely punished by his team and corporate sponsors.
“If Mr. Vick is guilty, he should pay for his crime, but to treat him as he is being treated now is also a crime,” White said at a news conference. “Be restrained in your premature judgment until the legal process is completed.”
Vick has pleaded not guilty to charges of sponsoring a dogfighting operation.
Les Southwick has been pilloried by the NAACP, the liberal People for the American Way and other groups for manufactured sins. But the jurist’s life in Mississippi in no way reflects the false charges of racism and gay bashing that his detractors paint, including the NAACP.
How about the NAACP giving Southwick the same chance that they want for Vick?
