Levee board OKs scaled-back flood control plan
The Rankin-Hinds Pearl River Flood Control Board voted today to begin studying a smaller and less expensive version of the massive LeFleur Lakes flood control plan.
At its meeting this morning, the levee board voted to back a plan with one smaller lake to be located further to the south along the Pearl River.
Engineers say this plan would cost about $1 billion less to build and be more environmentally sound than the $1.4 billion LeFleur Lakes project, which had called for two lakes running from the Ross Barnett Reservoir to south Rankin County.
