For many, the recent immigration battle left us feeling politically drained – “punch drunk” – by the barrage of media coverage and dueling venom.
U.S. Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., was heavily criticized for his position and his yes vote for cloture. In the final vote, 60 yes votes were required for cloture and the final tally revealed that those supporting cloture had fallen 14 votes short. However, it seems that certain senators who had previously supported cloture changed their minds, some at the last minute, when it became clear that the vote would fail.
While I did not agree with Sen. Lott’s position on this particular piece of legislation, he was resolute and did not waver under intense pressure. Again, many who oppose amnesty favor principle over pragmatism; Sen. Lott also favors personal principle over pragmatism, pressure and appeasement.
