Miss. not apologizing for slavery

By: Magnolia Tribune - May 29, 2007

The Hattiesburg American, 5/29/7

Alabama is now the fourth Southern state where modern-day lawmakers have apologized for slavery. In Mississippi, though, there has been no grand push to get an official acknowledgment of regret for what was once euphemistically called “the peculiar institution.”

If history is a guide, Mississippi lawmakers will be reluctant to act unless (1) it appears to be their own idea and not that of outsiders, and (2) leaders of the House and Senate actively support it by working behind the scenes to convince lawmakers that it’s a good idea and that it should be passed quickly, and with little fuss, to avoid embarrassing headlines.
