Citizen-led effort will help in the crime fight

While most of the attention in the Legislature was focused on controversial Jackson issues involving financial aid, a Civil Rights Museum and what to do with Veterans Memorial Stadium, some significant bills quietly were approved that can have a major impact on fighting crime.

The bills were developed and pushed by the local citizen-led, crime-fighting group, SafeCity Initiative. Unlike most citizen groups that run more on ideal than practical politics, the group did it right.

They hired lobbyists, did an extensive education process with potential opponents and worked with local officials to build consensus on bills that address specific problem areas in our criminal justice system.
