Barbour signs bill authorizing new car tags

Republican Gov. Haley Barbour on Friday signed a bill authorizing several new specialty car tag designs, including one for supporters of the Mississippi Democratic Party.

The new law takes effect July 1.

Each specialty tag costs $30 a year, on top of the local taxes drivers already pay for a generic license plate. For most specialty tags ? including the new one for Democrats ? $24 of the $30 goes to the organization named on the license plate.

There was no effort this year to create a vanity tag for supporters of the Republican Party.
