Wednesdays with Charlie Ross

I hope this week’s installment finds all of you well and you’ve been able to enjoy the beautiful Mississippi springtime we’ve been having.

We’re in the middle of crunch time at the Capitol. With session set to end on Sunday, there is a flurry of activity to finish all of the items on the agenda. I’m working hard for the people of Mississippi which is great honor and privilege.

Right now I am fighting to pass a measure I limiting the ability of municipalities to use eminent domain. If this bill passes, it will restrict the use of eminent domain to projects that are for direct public use. I authored the bill because I believe property owners are important to the state of Mississippi and they should not have to give up their land for a shopping mall.

This past weekend I had the opportunity to meet with several high school students who are interested in attending our nation’s service academies. Congressman Chip Pickering set up the event at Madison Central High School. Military Academy Day is a great way for these bright young students to learn about what it takes to succeed in the challenging environment of the academies. The day is particularly useful because the students get to meet Congressman Pickering, who is required to write a letter of recommendation for fit applicants in order for them to be admitted. I attended the Air Force Academy and it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

Look for us in your area in the next two weeks. Since session will end this weekend, I will be traveling the state sharing my conservative vision for Mississippi. I will try to keep the calendar updated on the “Events” portion of our website. As always, I am excited about the opportunity to meet so many interesting and concerned Mississippians. I love our great state, and the biggest part of that are the people.
