Politically my heroes are Roosevelt, Truman, and John F. Kennedy. Notice there is not a Republican in the bunch. However, I have great admiration for Abraham Lincoln. He saved the nation, but Democrats, starting with Roosevelt, made the great and powerful nation that we know today.

The Democratic Party is fighting back in Mississippi. Surprisingly, we have some money in our bank account now. When I became chairman last year, we had only one full-time employee in our state office. We now have four incredibly bright and dedicated employees there. There have been two special legislative elections over the past year – in Adams and Greene counties – and Democrats have won them both. Most importantly, Mississippi Democrats stood up to Gov. Haley Barbour and his ill-conceived Medicaid plans. We will continue to press the need for better education funding.

I am proud of the progressive Democrats in the Mississippi House who have fought Haley Barbour and the Republicans on Medicaid and reduced education funding. We have problems in the Mississippi Senate where a handful of timid Democrats have voted with Lt. Gov. Amy Tuck and Travis Little in leadership matters. Perhaps, these Democrats will not be certified by our party to run as Democrats in the future. If they are going to vote with Republicans on leadership issues, they should run as Republicans. If they accept what Republicans are doing to Medicaid, they should not be Democrats.

We will continue to build our party. We now have money in our bank account, and our financial position will improve more. We have a group of bright and dedicated folks working in our state office. We will aggressively remind Mississippians about the failures of the Barbour administration.

The Barbour administration has been a failure, and most people are beginning to realize that. Our colleges and universities have suffered under Haley’s watch. He has made a mess of Medicaid. I remember clearly when I first heard Haley say he was going to fix Medicaid. It reminded me of what people say to their dogs or cats when they are taking them to the vet to get them fixed. Since “President” Haley has fixed all our problems here, I understand he has left the country. He and his closest friends are charging through Southeast Asia, whooping it up. At least he cannot call any more of those special sessions while he is off in Asia.
