McCoy defends House positions

House Speaker Billy McCoy, addressing the Neshoba County Fair patrons for the first time, said the House of Representatives will continue to stand up for education funding and health care even if it means butting heads with the Senate and Gov. Haley Barbour.

McCoy said a fellow House member recently reminded him “an educated people will refuse to live in poverty. We know that and we will continue to accent education.”

Thursday’s speech at the fair was probably the most public venue outside the Capitol for the Rienzi Democrat since last year’s life-threatening illness and stroke.

Still, McCoy said, “God has given us so much in this state…Let us work together again for the good of the state.”

He and other politicians spoke Thursday before a large crowd on Founders’ Square.
