Senators look at ways to slow use of state cars
Mississippi government owns 9,335 vehicles, totaling $198.1 million, or 287 autos less than it owned one year ago, according to a study conducted by state Auditor Phil Bryant.
The study was completed for the Senate Fees, Salaries and Administration Committee, which held a hearing Monday at the state Capitol, on the number of state vehicles and how those automobiles are used.
In the report, Bryant said, “Because of the continuing use of SUVs for normal business travel by state employees, I would recommend that a strict standard be placed on any future purchases of these vehicles. I also believe purchasing smaller vehicles with more economical engines must be mandated.”
