Residents get Tips on Cleaning up Criminal Past

Some Mississippi residents who have committed crimes in the past may not know that they can get their records expunged or erased. Congressman Bennie Thompson sponsored an expungement summit Saturday at the Cade Chapel Baptist Church in Jackson.

Hundreds of people showed up to speak to attorneys with the Magnolia Bar Association to see if they qualify for expungement. The summits took place in Hinds, Washington, and Leflore counties. Congressman Thompson says the expungement may allow people to get better jobs and to vote again.

“Some of them have not voted since they committed the crime, and find out that really they can now vote again, so we’re getting some people registered to vote and getting them back into society,” said Thompson.

Expungements apply mostly to misdemeanor crimes.
