Vacant Houses Burn To Ground

Two vacant houses on south Roach Street in Jackson, just north of south Street, were destroyed by fire Monday afternoon.

The houses were completely engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on the scene. Captain Keith Simpson, spokesman for the Jackson Fire Department said they got the call at 1:39 P.M. It took almost an hour to extinguish the flames. Firefighters broke through the roof to put the fire out. There were no injuries. There have been several instances of abandoned houses in this area being destroyed by fire. Homeless people, who live in the area frequently sleep in the abandoned structures and accidentally set them on fire.

WLBT investigated the problem of abandoned homes burning down last year when the city said they were in the process of getting them torn down.
