Jackson police S.W.A.T. officers converge on the scene of a domestic dispute that led to a Jackson man shooting at a police officer Monday morning. Police were called to Owsley Street about 7 a.m. Monday. Officer Jerry Shoulders was shot by suspect Marvin Stamps, 30, but escaped serious injury.
Marvin Stamps went to his estranged girlfriend’s west Jackson home about 7 a.m. Monday and started banging on the front door.
A few hours later, after firing upon police, he ended up dead in a tin shed behind another home down the street.
“He was trying to get in and was acting crazy,” said Caprice Smith, Stamp’s girlfriend of eight years who last week tried to end the relationship. “I called the police and he was still acting crazy when they got here. They maced him and he busted through the house. Me and my (two) kids ran outside.
“He ran out the back of the house, turned around and fired a shot at the policeman,” said Smith, 30. “The officer shot back.”
About two hours later, police found Stamps, 30, hiding in the shed. After about five gunshots, Stamps was pronounced dead at the scene. He was shot once in the head, once in an armpit and once in his lower body, Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart said.
