Pearl scores grand slam with baseball stadium

From his suite at Trustmark Park, Tim Bennett should feel special Monday when the first pitch is tossed at the Mississippi Braves’ home opener.

As the key player in bringing the Braves to Pearl, Bennett didn’t just steal home. He scored the deciding run in the bottom of the ninth inning, making winners of Pearl, the state of Mississippi and himself.

This feat is even more significant because the local baseball experts said it wasn’t possible. The Braves also are vindication for Bennett, who said Jackson officials slammed the door on his efforts to land a minor league team with a Major League Baseball affiliation. Bennett said the Braves could be in Jackson had Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr. and Parks and Recreation Director Ramie Ford followed his lead.
