Forums kick off today for mayoral candidates
Democratic candidates Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr. and Annell Smith are scheduled to meet at 10 a.m. in the Woodworth Chapel on the Tougaloo campus. Frank Melton, another Democratic candidate, won’t be attending, according to his campaign.
The forum is sponsored by the newly incorporated Mississippi Democratic Club.
Johnson’s campaign has received more than 10 forum requests, Nikki Burns, Johnson’s press secretary, said Friday.
Derrick Johnson, the mayor’s campaign manager, said the mayor is trying to accommodate as many public forums as possible to ensure voters see the differences between the candidates. If the mayor can’t attend a forum in person, he would at least send a surrogate.
