Melton’s Residency Dividing Democrats

Melton’s Residency Dividing Democrats

Representative Earle Banks is on the State Democratic Committee. He said, “It’s about politics, it’s about getting Mr.Melton out of the race so Mayor Johnson has a clear shot to win the primary in which he faces Rick Whitlow.”

Lavaree Jones is in charge of party development and organization for the Democratic Party of Mississippi. She said, “It’s not about Frank Melton, this is about us having a democratic candidate in the race.”

The court said homestead exemption can be used to provide a strong presumption of residency in candidacy disputes. But exceptions can be made if a candidate can prove residency in other ways. Melton’s attorney said the deadline to challenge candidacy expired 30 days ago…ten days after the application deadline.
