Lucien Smith served as the 12th Chairman of the Mississippi Republican Party and served as Chief of Staff to Governor Phil Bryant and as a senior advisor to Governor Haley Barbour. He oversaw Governor Bryant’s policy and legislative operation during the drafting and passage of the 2013 Education Works reforms that implemented the third-grade gate and expanded the availability of charter schools.
