YP – Governor Reeves extends unemployment benefits
Today, Governor Tate Reeves announced efforts to extend the unemployment benefits provided to help Mississippi workers and their families hard-hit by COVID-19.
Working to support Mississippi’s dedicated workforce, Governor Reeves signed a new executive order updating instructions to the Mississippi Department of Employment Security (MDES) to further relieve undue burdens caused by the pandemic. This new executive order replaces the Governor’s initial unemployment order, Executive Order No. 1462, which began the process of expediting payments to unemployed Mississippians.

YP – Mississippi’s 3 day average rate of COVID-19 infections hit their lowest point measured today
The Mississippi Department of Health reported 173 new total cases today bringing the total reported cases to 9,674. There were 5 COVID-19 related deaths reported today bringing the total to 435.
The 3 day trailing average of new cases was 2.10%, which is the lowest point measured during the pandemic. The three day trailing average of deaths attributable to COVID-19 was 2.08%. Again, that is the lowest measured result during the pandemic.
YP – Gunn vindicated by IRS on prohibiting lawmakers serving while ‘double dipping’ PERS
Retired public employees, namely teachers, were said to be “a game changer” in the Mississippi Legislature, at least that is what the left was pushing in their narrative. It was said to “scare Philip Gunn to death.”
Those voices were wrong.
Last Thursday, the IRS provided a response to PERS whereby they declined to rule on the request that emanated from political efforts in 2019 to allow retired teachers to serve as legislators while still getting their full PERS benefits.

Total revenue collections for the month of April FY 2020 are $244,027,241 or 29.51% below the sine die revenue estimate. Fiscal YTD revenue collections through April are $26,348,813 or 0.57% below the sine die estimate. Fiscal YTD total revenue collections through April 2020 are $108,574,922 or 2.31% below the prior year’s collections. The FY 2020 Sine Die Revenue Estimate is $5,858,400,000.

YP – Senate to Hold Hearings on Immediate COVID-19 Expenses, Including Hospitals, Local Governments, and Distance Learning
Senators will have the opportunity to participate in four hearings related to immediate and future COVID-19 expenses when the 2020 Legislative Session reconvenes in Jackson this week.
The Mississippi Senate gavels in at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 12, 2020, to continue their work in appropriating $1.25 billion in federal funds provided through the CARES Act passed by Congress in April. Last week, legislators began the initial steps of creating a grant program to help small businesses stay afloat.
