Treasurer David McRae
This week, State Treasurer David McRae held local office hours in Meridian, Mississippi. In just five hours, Treasury’s team identified more than $165,000 in unclaimed property through 100+ claims. The event attracted more than 250 area residents and is the first in a series of local office hours that will be held this year. All Mississippians are encouraged to begin their search for unclaimed property now and can do so at treasury.ms.gov.
“This is your money. We know it doesn’t belong in the state’s account and so we’re going to be very proactive in trying to make sure the rightful owners are found,” said McRae. “I am thrilled we were able to match Lauderdale County residents with more than $165,000. As we work our way across the state, I encourage everyone to visit our website and begin your search.”
After five years of no contact, banks, credit unions, insurance companies, retail stores, and others are required to turn over any assets for which they are unable to find the rightful owner. The Treasury Department’s Unclaimed Property Division is charged with trying to locate the owners of such assets and return the money to them. You are invited to begin your search for unclaimed property on the Treasury Department’s website: treasury.ms.gov
