Allegations, rumors and an ESPN.com report citing sources at Mississippi State have not been pleasing reads for the SEC’s commissioner. Simply put, public perception has dirtied the SEC name — fairly or unfairly — over the last week as allegations concerning the recruitment of Newton at MSU have grown in recent days.

“I don’t think it’s helped us,” Slive said in a phone conversation with The Clarion-Ledger on Friday afternoon. “It hasn’t helped us.”
