Spurrier’s talent infusion pays off
You wondered if Steve Spurrier could ever win a big game again, like he had done in his previous coaching life at Florida during the 1990s, when his Gators pounded just about every team in the Southeastern Conference.
Well, ol’ Darth Visor answered that question Saturday when his No. 19 Gamecocks beat defending national champion and No. 1 ranked Alabama, 35-21, ending a load of Tide winning streaks.
The natural tendency is to believe that the 65-year-old Spurrier, who before Saturday was a combined 6-17 coaching Carolina vs. the SEC’s usual elite teams (Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Tennessee), had lost some speed off his coaching fastball.
