Joey Bourgeois and Chris Matulis, two veteran pitchers who figured to play key roles on LSU’s staff next season, will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the 2011 season, coach Paul Mainieri confirmed in a text message Saturday.

“It’s a tough blow to us, but we will recover and find a way to get it done,” said Mainieri, who added he and his staff are still recruiting for this coming season.

Bourgeois (4-1, 6.68 earned run average), a right-hander, started 12 games as a sophomore — more than anybody on the staff except Austin Ross, an eighth-round pick in last month’s major league draft who has agreed to terms with the Milwaukee Brewers.
